After being diagnosed with cancer, I did some research and found that Western medicine's approach to treating cancer can be characterized by "three highs and one low": a high recurrence rate, a high metastasis rate, high treatment costs, and a relatively low 5-year survival rate. This is completely different from common ailments like colds and fevers, which can usually be treated effectively by both Western and traditional Chinese medicine, and patients often recover as if they've never been sick. So, what are the specific challenges in treating cancer, and where do these difficulties lie?
It cannot be denied that both traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Western medicine are making efforts to treat various cancer patients, but their approaches differ significantly. As of now, it is challenging to integrate the practices of TCM and Western medicine. What's particularly unfortunate is that some treatments in Western medicine pose additional difficulties for TCM practitioners.
1. Impact on the Body's Vital Energy: Cancer patients often suffer from disrupted vital energy (or "qi") due to the disease itself. Their meridians may become blocked, and their physiological functions are often compromised. Additionally, aggressive Western treatments like surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy can further weaken the patient's vital energy. Traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes the importance of supporting and strengthening the body's vital energy. After Western treatments, patients often experience symptoms such as loss of appetite, poor sleep quality, fatigue, weakness, and depression, which are indications of the severe disruption of their normal physiological functions. In some cases, despite undergoing surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, patients may still experience relapse or metastasis, leading to a point where Western medicine may have to be abandoned, and patients turn to traditional Chinese medicine. At this stage, the focus of traditional Chinese medicine is to enhance the patient's overall well-being, ensuring they can eat, sleep, and live with vitality. It has been proven that traditional Chinese medicine can help restore the patient's vital energy and ultimately resolve the disease. This is the key.
2. Obstruction of Pathological Products: The essence of tumors is not something that suddenly appears in the body; it accumulates over time as a result of the body's own struggles between positive and pathogenic energies. It is a natural phenomenon, not the problem itself (the reasons for tumor formation are explained in another essay). Therefore, this phenomenon of life can come and go, form and dissolve within the human body. How it goes away—meaning how the accumulated pathological products are released and eliminated from the body—is the critical issue. In simple terms, traditional Chinese medicine aims to release the disease energy rather than directly combat it. While Western medicine tends to block, traditional Chinese medicine seeks to open up blockages. This duality determines whether a tumor will take a positive or negative direction and depends on how it is treated. In essence, tumors are a kind of congestion and aggregation of phlegm, stasis, and other pathogenic factors. Eliminating this congestion and allowing these pathological products to be excreted resolves the disease.
3. Patient's Cognitive Understanding of the Two Medical Systems: Western medicine is the mainstream modern medical system, and its approach to cancer often involves surgery to remove tumors, followed by radiation and chemotherapy, with the ultimate goal being a 5-year survival rate. Some patients have become accustomed to this treatment paradigm and accept it as the norm. If they recover, it's a pleasant surprise; if they don't, it's fate. Unfortunately, countless patients have perished following this treatment approach. Some patients are told by Western medicine that their condition isn't suitable for surgery, so they turn to traditional Chinese medicine. With the help of capable traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, their vital energy is restored, and they regain strength. At this point, their condition may become suitable for surgery again, and they rush back to Western medicine for surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. There are also patients who shuttle between Western and traditional Chinese medicine, not fully trusting either approach, leading to predictable outcomes.
In summary, a patient's understanding of the world, their choice of treatment methods, and their commitment to the chosen method are crucial. In today's world, we need skilled traditional Chinese medicine practitioners to demonstrate the greatness of traditional Chinese medicine to the world, and we need educators in traditional Chinese medicine to enlighten the public.
To conclude, while these three areas pose challenges, they also represent opportunities for breakthroughs and hope.
