【Predecessors release medicine】

"Compendium of Materia Medica" says: "Honeysuckle is used to treat bloating and diarrhea, eliminate carbuncle and disperse toxins, and replenish deficiency and treat wind. People only know its disinfection function, but are ignorant of its function of treating wind deficiency. I have used it for various symptoms and it has been effective time and again."

"Ben Jing Feng Yuan" says: "Honeysuckle can remove toxins and pus, and it is a tonic in the process of purgation. It is a holy medicine for carbuncle ulcers. However, it should not be used for those with weak qi, clear pus, and diarrhea due to poor appetite. For smallpox sores that cannot be lifted up, use this root to decoct in running water for bathing. The effect is to make the smallpox glow and become stronger. This is a modified version of Shuiyang Decoction."

"Compendium of Materia Medica" says: "It is slightly cold in nature and good at detoxifying. Therefore, it is an essential medicine for treating carbuncle, swelling, sore, ringworm, bayberry, rheumatism and other poisons. It can disperse the poison that has not yet formed and can eliminate the poison that has already formed. However, it is slow in nature, so it must be doubled or boiled with wine, or mashed and mixed with wine to drink, or ground and mixed with wine to apply thickly. If it is used to treat scrofula and various poisons in the upper part of the body, use about one or two liang, and boil it frequently for a very effective effect."

"Compendium of Materia Medica" says: "All books say that honeysuckle can nourish the body and nourish the blood, and that it can enter the lungs to dissipate heat, and can treat malignant sores, intestinal diarrhea, carbuncle, hemorrhoids, and is a common medicine for treating poison in surgery. This seems to be a divergence. Little do people know that the book says that it can nourish the body because it is fragrant and sweet. Although it enters the body to expel heat, its qi is not very fast and harmful; the book says that it can nourish the blood because its poison is condensed in the blood, and taking this poison gas will suddenly resolve, and the blood will be nourished by itself. In fact, it is only a product for clearing heat and detoxifying. Therefore, all diseases such as carbuncle can be treated with this internal medicine, taking its qi to cool and relieve heat, and advocating for unblocking. If you say that taking it for a long time will make you lighter and prolong your life, it is not without flattery. All the ancients who expressed the efficacy of medicine were like this, but those who use medicine should be clear and not be confused by the efficacy of medicine."

Precautions for making Chinese herbal medicine:

1. The medicine jar must be cleaned

When decocting Chinese medicine, the medicinal juice is concentrated due to evaporation of water, and a layer of medicinal scale often accumulates at the bottom and around the medicine pot. If the decocted medicine in the medicine pot is often changed, and the accumulated medicinal scale is not wiped off in time, the medicinal scale will dissolve when the new medicine is decocted, interfering with and reducing the efficacy of the medicine, and even delaying the treatment of the disease. Especially if highly toxic medicines or external medicines that cannot be eaten have been decocted before, it may cause poisoning.

In addition, if the Chinese medicine is not cleaned immediately after each decoction, the scale at the bottom of the medicine pot will become thicker and thicker, and it will easily burn when the medicine is re-decocted, thus losing its efficacy.

2. Whether to cover the medicine

Generally speaking, in order to make Chinese medicine boil thoroughly, it is best to cover it. This is especially true for Chinese medicines containing volatile ingredients, such as mint, patchouli, and perilla leaves, and they should be boiled in a short time to prevent the active ingredients from volatilizing. For some expensive medicines, such as ginseng, deer antler, and wolfberry, the active ingredients should be fully released.

Some Chinese herbal medicines are light in weight and large in size, such as Centella asiatica, Prunella vulgaris, White tongcao, Loofah, Corn hair, etc., so they should not be decocted with the lid on, otherwise they will often overflow from the pot. You can decoct with the lid on and stir at any time.

3. Fry thoroughly and squeeze dry

"Decoction thoroughly" means that the active ingredients of the medicine are fully released, which is the basic requirement for decoction. For medicines with tough texture and difficult to release active ingredients at once, only by decoction separately, decocting first, decocting for a long time, etc. can the medicine juice be thickened and the efficacy be fully exerted. Medicines with loose texture and light and fragrant nature do not need to be decocted for too long; but herbs with light texture and large body should be stirred frequently to facilitate decoction.
